Alright, it's been a really long time since I've updated my blog. So here is a rough overview of what I've been up to....

These first four are sketches I did for my cousin. He called and asked if I could draw Iron Man for him, so I drew a few heros for him.

This one was just for fun. I got real interested in drawing like comics, so this is one of my "successful" attempts.

Here is another comic character... just keep in mind this is stepping out of my drawing comfort zone a bit.

This is a concept that My wife and I worked on for a local clothing company. The project never took off, but it was fun. Colleen did the physical line work. I scanned, cleaned up the lines, and colored.

This is a concept beer label for my brother-in-laws and my "future"brew.

So recently I purchases an 80s Schwinn road bike. It is pretty good condition, but was in need of some fixn'

Grace and I took my bike apart, painted it and put it back together. It's not perfect, but I think it looks pretty good so far.

It kinda needs a new seat, part of it is ripped. And I am going to get red cork tape for the handle bars.

What do ya'll think?

Coopers first big swim!!

So yesterday I went to Turtle Beach with the Ballingers for a dog get together. Before this Cooper had always been a little cautious about going too deep in the water, but this time he didn't hesitate from the beginning. Copper would swim out to retrieve the ball every single time we would throw it. Callie get to the point where she decides she just isn't going to swim any more, but Cooper was too obsessed to not get it.

I just finished the second shot for Colleen and my Sr project. The first shot had the most objects being animated out of the entire film. It is 11 seconds long and it took 12 hours. The second shot was fairly simple but a bit of the acting was tough for me to pull off. The second shot is 8 seconds and it took me 10 and a half hours. So this is the second all nighter I have pulled off while I'm sick and got good results. Below is a special celebratory image...

Inspirational Design is a class I have been taking where we get to talk to professionals in the field. The last person we got to talk to was Paul Conrad. He is a super talented Illustrator. One thing that he worked on that everyone would know about is Pixars new film UP. He did so much illustration for the film such as travel posters in the film, designing the Russell's merit badges, the bottle caps and much much more. Sr Project Thus Far

Colleen and I are getting places with our Sr Project... The image below is the color scheme we are shooting for. We want it to look very illustrative and our main intended audience is children. So this image shows the colors and the lighting we are shooting for.

Now the image below is where we are in the progress of physically making this happen.

The hippo that you see in the bottom image is just the stand in Hippo that we made a while ago. And the paper bird is also a stand in... but I think the bird looks pretty good. There is alot that needs to change in this bottom image for it to match our color scheme. The hill for one needs alot of work and the hippo will be a bit more purple. We will probably get pretty close to what we want by Sunday and hopefully be able to animate by Monday. That is as long as we don't keep getting set back several days work like we have been. The other day we finally got to cast our new Hippo puppet... but at the end of baking it we realized that the oven was set to 480 degrees instead of 200. So not only was it a failed cast it ruined the armature that is inside the puppet... and nearly destroyed the mold. So I will need to rebuild the armature and then we will recast and hopefully it will work out. So after an intense weekend catching up we should be ready to animate next week!!!

Movie Poster Parody-The Robot that challenged the World

This is a concept for my inspirational design class. We were given a cheesy old-time monster movie to create a parody poster for. I did a quick sketch of this robot swatting at a helicopter earlier today and I thought I would take the sketch through the steps of making it an old time monster movie poster. This was just a real quick test just to get an idea of what I might want... But I may come up with a better Idea, I'll post any tests I do. What do you think?

Here is a 3D composite I did for my inspirational design class. Try to guess what I composited into the photograph... don't peek below

Okay so you probably figured it out. The nesting dolls were made in 3D and then composited into a photograph I took in my house. Here they are without a word to live in.

Below is the Occlusion layer... Occlusion is what happens when two objects are close together. It makes a shadow because light doesn't get to it those spaces very well. This helps to ground the 3D objects into reality, cause occlusion is everywhere in the real world.

Now the picture below is the reflection layer for the "Gazing Ball" that is in the picture.

Speaking of the Gazing Ball... This is what I used to light the nesting dolls. I took several pictures of this reflective chrome ball at different exposures to capture the reflections and the light sources of the room. Here is the HDR (High Dynamic Range) image I used. Oh BTW this is the first time I have gotten to use my gazing ball to light a 3D scene.

The next image is the picture I took before adding the nesting dolls.

Here is an image of my nesting dolls I modeled in Maya and textured using photoshop and painter. I have done just a little bit with the lighting so that I could see the textures and what not, but I will be making my own HDR image to light them. I Started t animate them popping out of each other. I hope to have that done and posted in a week or so. I'll try to post some more images when I start actually lighting this in the next few days. So today Colleen and I drove to St louis to meet my grandfather so I could trade vehicles with him. I have had my truck for about 7 years and today I traded it for a Malibu Maxx!! This car is perfect cause it is like a wagon and has space for my two dogs, and also room for people. Here it is at the gas station.

Life equilibrium

Well being away from home for 2 weeks makes returning to your normal life a bit difficult. We spent a week in WV with Colleens family and then spent a week in IN with my family. At the end of the week with my family Colleen my sister and I drove 4 hours south and got a new dog!! Exciting, but stressful. The new dog is an Australian cattle dog just like our dog Callie except this new guy is red. This is one reason it was difficult to get back to our normal lives. He is a very willful dog, he has alot of energy, but is very very sweet.
The second thing that made it a little difficult for our life to reach an equilibrium is our pipes froze and we didn't have water until the second day. Our kitchen sink kinda burst so water sprays in a few directions when its on, but other than that the house was fine.
So after nearly a week back at Huntington our life is beginning to feel normal. Our new dog Cooper is starting to behave a bit better also.

Christmas in WV

So this was my first Christmas as a married man. We spent Christmas this year with Colleens family and it was a lot of fun. There were a lot of sweets, traditions and parties. And today we are heading back to Indiana to have another Christmas with my family. Just because the date isn't the 25th doesn't mean it's not Christmas. At my parents house the big tradition is making banana bread with my mom. We always make a whole bunch, and this will be Colleens second year to be a part of this tradition. The other part of Christmas that has been important to me is every Christmas morning Grace and I would get up and hang out together until our parents decided it was time to open gifts. That was one of the biggest things I knew I was going to miss this year, but on Christmas morning Grace texted me and said that she was thinking about getting up to do presents. Then we had a texting conversation, and even though I wasn't at home I was still able to hang out with my sister before the gifts. So in just about ten hours I will be on my way to my parents house and Christmas tarts all over again.

Here is a test I did for mine and Colleens senior project. We just finished the Hippo puppet earlier today, so I stayed up real late and did a test animation to see if the rig I built to hold him works and to see if the armature I built for him works. And the answer is... for the most part.

Sorry I haven't been posting lately, but I haven't really had a chance to until now. Below is a still from a 3D animation project. Through this project i have been learning how to make a 3D character an actor on the screen. This is tricky if you yourself aren't an actor because I literally have to keep track of every single part of his body for every single frame. Each part of his body has a control that can be translated in space or rotated, and some are even controlled by numbers typed into a window. So for every part of his body I have to keep track of every movement for every frame. It plays at 24 frames for every second and is 10 seconds long. This means that there are 240 frames with dozens of controls. To sum up, there's alot to keep track of, and hopefully I will have time to do another post soon. Sorry about the boring explanation.

Although the field that we went to isn't all that big, it's big enough that we never use even close to the whole field.... not with the way I throw the ball anyways.

And the theme for the las two is confident... I enjoy lighting them a whole lot. I love to enclude cools and warms, and sometimes high key verses low key. I think the lighting in the two below effect the mood of the pose, even though the pose is exactly the same in both. The magic of Lighting.

Today was the Huntington Pioneer Festival. This is a time where people dress up in old time clothes and sell things such as fresh produce, local honey, and antiques. Below are some pictures.

As of now I have tuned up/reanimated the first and second scene and redone the lighting. I think it's improving, we will see when it's all done I guess.

Little Guy-A New Hope

Below are some images from my 3D environments final fall of 2008. This was possibly one of the most involved pieces I have ever done. The film is 45 seconds long, I did it in just one semester. I was able to do this much animation because I chose a style that I could manage fairly quickly. At the end of the semester I had all the animation done and rendered it out and did alot of image editing in after effects... then I got to watch it for the first time. I was very disappointed with it and didn't watch it again until the end of the spring semester when my professor wanted it in the showcase. After watching it I realized that there was alot of good stuff there.

So all of this is to say that I have decided to revisit the film this next year. My goal is to fine tune some of the animation, and redo a few of the shots and slow down the pace a bit so it communicates more clearly. I want to get it remastered before I graduate so it can be in my reel.

Well today I was looking into the upcoming feature length film 9. This animated film comes out 9-9-09!! As I was looking into it, I found out that the movie is based on a short film made in 2005 by Shane Acker. The short is great, and I have high hopes for the feature length. Its produced by Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov. We will see how the movie turns out.

Here are the the pics I have of a stray dog that Colleen and I picked up from a park earlier today. I have begun to love this dog. He has started to listen to me and see me as an authority. He can now sit most of the time and he sticks around me outside without a leash. I may have to give him up at a shelter because I am not at a place where I can currently keep him :( So enjoy these pics and Colleen has some up on facebook!!

So this evening I have been working on some new animation techniques and I got super frustrated. I did 22 tutorials that should have made my animating career easier, but I have spent hours and hours trying to get it to work out properly and haven't gotten very far. So to relieve my stress so that I feel like I've accomplished something in the past 9 hours I took a break from animating and tested out a rendering aesthetic I had been wanting to try. The image above is in fact the rendering technique. My professor showed a video to my class a week or so ago and it had a similar look and thats where I got the idea.
So I guess when I get frustrated trying out something new I try out something else new, go figure. Click for a bigger version if you please.

Sculpty sculpt sculpt

Here are a couple pics of a sculpt I am working on. He is being sculpted out of clay and then I am going to make a make a mold out of him so I can make a stop motion puppet. He is still in progress at the moment but he will soon have a right cuff and pants. What I did was sculpt him out of clay without any clothes on then I rolled out some sheets of clay and pressed a burlap texture onto the sheets of clay. I then carefully cut out pieces in a pattern so that I could lay these clay sheets on him like clothes. So underneath his clothes is a man and under the man is... his nucleus. I plan to have two little black dots for eyes and I am not exactly sure what I am going to do for his mouth.

Here is my concept for my next 3D Illustration. The theme is 11'' by 14'' poster based around circus. All the characters are going to made in 3D and then toon shaded for a look very similar to this. I am still working on the font and what not, but I think it should turn out pretty good. Click on the image for a big version.

Here is my motion graphics final Colleen and I did last semester. This project was done in After effects... Colleen did the Character design and "set" design in photoshop and I did the animation and lighting in After effects. I think it turned out nicely.

3D Illustration

This semester I am doing an independent study with 3 of my friends. The independent study is 3D Illustration, we are using Maya and photoshop to create Illustrations. Through the semester we will do 4 different Illustrations each of us will get to pick the theme and a few other perimeters. This one was the first and the theme was Jonah's Folly album art. We had to create album art for a made up band called Jonah's Folly and we had to incorporate a whale. So here is the finished product. Feel free to leave input.

Big Day!!!

So this is Colleen and I. Today was her birthday

I took her out to Forks of the Wabash for a picnic lunch. Before hand I hid a present for her in a tree. This gift was a heart shaped wooden box that I made with a ring in it. I asked her to marry me and she said yes. It has been a great day.

And here is the ring, it's made of Ivory and has a twisted rope design on the top.

Fixed lens

My room mate Curtis recently got a Digital Canon and a few lenses. The one I love the most is his 50 fixed lens. Colleen and I got to play with it for a while and we both felt like we needed one. But for me having one of these awesome lenses would do no good... for I have no digital camera. But I do love taking photos and love learning about the different aspects of photography. lucky for me my room mate, girlfriend, and mother all have cameras I can use so I can get my fix every once in a while. These are two photos I took one night with this lens, it was a somewhat low lighting situation and his auto focus doesn't work... but with the low aperture the low lighting wasn't a huge factor and actually made the lighting pretty interesting. All the lighting was from incandescent bulbs and such so everything was pretty yellow and warm. The low aperture also allows for a shorter depth of field, which makes me want one even more. One lens I want that most people kinda give me a funny face about is a 12 or so mm lens. I love the fish eye effect and this kind of lens takes real cool landscape photos. Maybe someday.

Sorry I haven't updated in a while... Haven't had much to post about... but I saw this picture that Colleen put on facebook and I loved it. For those of you who don't know who Bob King he is Colleens brothers dog. This dog has a huge personality and I fell for him the moment he crawled into my lap. I have never been a fan of dogs who shed... but this one took the cake.

Here's a picture I took of myself this past Summer in Athens Ohio. Colleen and I stayed at a homeless shelter to take photos, and during the day we hung in the "city." This trip is proof that God will put you in situations that you don't want to be in and use you in ways that you don't expect. This trip brought me closer to God than I have ever been, I learned a whole lot and made a bunch of friends that I didn't expect to make.

Here are my Drawings for the Owl-a-thon, or Owl-off... We started Yesterday and went to 5 o-clock today, Friday. We each were able to do 19, we could have done more if we had more free time do devote to it. I chose to focus on inking textures for most of my owls. Little Guy Update

Here is the most recent image from my 3D computer animation. I've been working on texturing and lighting the past few days. I have also been experimenting with occlusion passes. So far I have lit the entire scene without using lights. Some of you might be wondering how this isn't just black if there are no lights, well what I do is build objects and then make them glow in the scene... in a controlled way.

Here is the image just rendered out without anything fancy. Notice the lack of the "cool" as compared with the final.

Then I do an ambient occlusion pass. An ambient occlusion pass puts a shadow where two objects are close together, or just certain variances in the surface.

Here's another one for the rest of my scene. I did this part of my scene separately so I could have control over the darks in the planets without making my character darker.

Here's an illustration I did today while I worked.

This is my original drawing.

Here are the color shapes by them selves. I did the muted green background first to set the feel I wanted.

Next I laid some paper texture on top of the color shapes to give them a paper hand made look.

Here I put in the line for the ropes suspending the heart. I also added some text from a Peanuts Book.

And for the final look I put another paper texture over the entire thing and did a slight color adjustment.... So I hope you like the product. Remember you can click the images for a bigger one

This is a render from the 3D project I am working on for Environments class. The animation is about a little creature from space who is riding a meteor and sees the Earth. Once he sees the Earth he jumps off the meteor and starts falling toward earth. Perhaps he will find happiness on Earth.

Henry and the Banshee

This is an illustration of a boy and a banshee that I would love to turn into either a book, or just a series of short stories accompanied by illustrations.
The boy, whose name is Henry, has this friend which is a Banshee. Henry is the only one who can see him. The Banshee pulls henry around in a wagon, and Henry loves to hang different things from the loop in the Banshees head.
So there is some of what I have in mind for these two.
